Todra

Today was a pleasant drive across the Atlas Mountains at the Tizin Tichka Pass (2260 mtrs) before entering the desert region in the east. One of the highlights was visiting the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou of movie fame such as Gladiator. It was however, a real relief to arrive at our accomodation at about  6.30 as a problem with my back was causing considerable pain not to mention a few issues with the fish I ate the night before. It was an early night for me with no dinner.
Woke this morning, somewhat better, so enjoyed a walk in the Todra Gorge then to an area of Palm Groves and gardens before having mint tea at a Berber family home where we got dress in Berber style. Lunch was interesting - our guide bought some meat from a meat seller then took it to a sort of cafe where it was cooked for us. It did look ok - if only I ate red meat and hadn't just recovered from a light dose of food poisoning. I just stuffed the bread available with the tomato and onion to ward of any hunger pains. Then we visited a carpet warehouse and were given more mint tea and listened politely to the excellent presentation before escaping without purchasing anything. I just cannot see one of those carpets in my home let alone the issue of gettingit back there.
Tomorrow we head for the desert so not expecting to have Wi-Fi.

    Looks amazing. Sorry about the upset stomach. Perhaps the goats head might have helped 😁

Gibraltar

We boarded our bus for the last time yesterday morning for the short drive to Tangier. Here we sadly parted company with our Moroccan guide, Mustafa and driver Abdula. We then boarded the ferry bound for the Spanish port of Algeciras. This took about an hour and a half (apparently nephew Gavin swam this stretch of water - #124 to do so - a tremendous feat).  Once there we passed through border control without any dramas and then walked some distance to a bus station. Here we boarded a bus and travelled for about half hour. Then back on foot we passed through another border control, leaving Spain, then entering Gibraltar. We had now managed to be in three countries all in a matter of hours. Having arrived in Gibraltar we discovered our travel was far from finished as our leader, Judy, raced off across the runway (yes - you cross the airfield to enter Gibraltar) Then through street after street, all dragging our bags behind us eventually arriving at our accomodation just off the main...

Nerja

Another early start this morning and another couple of buses. The first a local one and then the next that took just about two hours to travel between Granada and Nerja. Nerja is a small seaside town on the Mediterranean. It was hoped it would be warm enough to swim but although the day heated up I was not tempted. Our second day here we had a late start of 9.15 which was awesome. No breakfasts provided here so my room mate and I downed some yoghurt and a banana in our room. We then visited  Cueva de Nerja, huge caverns only a few minutes from here (by bus of course).  The point of difference with these caves is the evidence found of very early man living in them. Unfortunately we did not get to see any of the precious cave drawings.  They are kept safely hidden from the public. Tonight we have our final group dinner and a Flamenco Show. It is expected to be a late night. Tomorrow we begin our trip home - bus to Malaga, plane to Madrid where we have a 7 hour stopover b...

Sevilla

Yesterday we left Ronda in a mini bus for Jedez de la Frontera, a small town famous for its fine sherry. Here we learnt all about the making of the famous Sandeman sherry and the tasting at the end reminded me how much I do not like sherry. I was more than happy to be continuing on to Sevilla with enough of the day left to allow us time to check out the local area. Today we left the hotel at 9am and didn't return until 5pm. We were on our feet most of that time and it feels like it.  First we visited the Plaza de Espana which is beautifully decorated with mosaics and then it was off to visit the Cathedral - the largest gothic cathedral in the world. Unfortunately I do not have photos of either of these  because my phone/camera died sometime during the night. Luckily I was able to get it fixed but as it is a new phone I am not very impressed. Fingers crossed it behaves for the rest of the trip - systems error they said - they didn't speak much English and my knowledge of Spanis...
